In this age of web based information, hand held computers, and streaming video, we are becoming increasingly “visual” creatures when it comes to information. If you know nothing about image editing, are just starting out, or have been involved in graphic design for a while, there will be something for you to learn or take away.  Join us for this April eSIG event  if you want to:

  • Explore several easy graphic design techniques using Adobe Photoshop and similar graphic editing tools.
  • Learn where you can get free and low cost stock images and graphics suitable for training.
  • View “before and after” examples of presentation slides and training activities that have been enhanced with graphics.
  • Learn how to integrate simple graphic elements into web based training and e-learning programs to enhance the “end-user” experience.
Presentation Description and Intended Audience

Along with other professions, training designers and instructors have adapted to take advantage of these new methods of communication. Gone are the days of overhead transparencies and simple PowerPoint slides. Today’s learning audience demands a more engaging product and graphics can play a big part in improving the adult learning process.  The good news is that you don’t have to be a graphic design artist to take advantage of the many applications and image resources available.

During this presentation we will discuss how you can use Photoshop and other similarly powerful (and FREE) image editing software to enhance the look and feel of your training products. You will learn how to legally obtain high quality stock images that can be edited or used “as is” in your training and development programs. We will also look at several examples of how graphics can be effectively used in both classroom and web based training as ice breaker activities, slide enhancements, and as navigation aids for self paced learning.

ASTD Competency Model:

The Areas of Expertise, as defined by the ASTD Competency Model, include nine critical factors needed to
be a successful workplace learning professional.  This month’s eSIG event supports the Area of Expertise entitled, “Designing Learning.”

Presenter:

Tom Speer, Training Manager for the Unitrin Services Group.  Tom and his team support the training and professional development needs of three property and casualty insurance companies.  Tom has over 30 years of experience in training design and delivery, serving as both an instructor and training manager in the U.S. Navy, CSX Transportation, Kemper Insurance, and with the Unitrin Corporation.

He holds a Master’s degree in Business Management and a Bachelor’s degree in curriculum development. Tom has also been a freelance graphic artist for the last 14 years. During this time, he has designed graphics for a variety of commercial websites and training programs using Photoshop and other design applications. He has also competed in many Photoshop graphics contests and published several image editing and design articles for web-based “e-Zines” and graphic design groups.

Please join us for networking, complimentary coffee and bagels, and an informative start to your day.
